June 2016 was a time that changed our lives forever. My daughter was using the bathroom frequently, drinking lots of water, complaining of pain with urination and even wet the bed once. She was 7 and none of this was normal for her. I took her into see her primary care doctor and was told she had type 1 diabetes. Her urine was had glucose and protein in and her blood sugar was 435. We were sent over to the ED and ended up staying 3 days at the local Children's Hospital.
During those 3 days we were taught everything we needed to know about type 1 diabetes and how to manage it in our daughter. She handled it like a champ, all the needles sticks and finger pokes throughout the day and night. This is when my life as a T1D mom started, and it will forever be a part of my life. We will continue to pray and fight for a cure as we battle this disease together.
I will continue to share by story and education others on this disease because there are too many misconceptions and uneducated people in this world which has caused complications and even death that could have been prevented if they knew the signs and symptoms sooner.
JDRF is the leading global organization funding type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Our strength lies in our exclusive focus and singular influence on the worldwide effort to end T1D.
Vision: A world without type 1 diabetes
Mission: Improving lives today and tomorrow by accelerating life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications
JDRF works every day to change the reality of this disease for millions of people—and to prevent anyone else from ever knowing it—by funding research; advocating for government support of research and new therapies; ensuring new therapies come to market and are recommended by healthcare providers; and connecting, engaging, and educating the T1D community.
When J was diagnosed and set up on the pump none of the logbooks, I found out there, had what we needed. Her school had a cool one that they used but it was one they made their themselves. So, when I figured out how to do it myself and have enough room for everything and had exactly what I needed I made it. I also made if for others. My daughter told me she thinks this will be very helpful for newly diagnosed families. If you would like to check it out, click the link - its available on Amazon.
